Coconut Times: May 2001 Performance: Fager's Island May 2001 Brenda Golden This week I'm looking forward to hearing Carey Ziegler's Expensive Hobby at Fager's Island on Saturday night. Carey, who plays bass and sings, is well-known in musical circles and I'm sure by all you Baltimore natives. He has performed with such groups as Roy Buchanan, the Edgar Winter Group, and Crack The Sky. He has traveled through Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and more; and has performed with local groups Carry On, Glass House, No Heroes, and of course, Band of 1000 Names with Paul Reed Smith, Russell Stone, Gregory Phillips, and David Glaser. Ziegler has played such venues as the Roxy and the Hollywood Palace in L.A., the Bottom Line and Beacon Theatre in NYC and Carnegie Hall (this was filmed lived with Roy Buchanan and the video is entitled "Further On Down The Road", with Albert Collins and Lonnie Mack. Performing with Carey in Expensive Hobby is Glenn Workman on keyboards and vocals. He has played in the Baltimore-based original rock band Off The Wall for over 20 years and has worked with Crack The Sky and other groups too numerous to mention here. He is also a keyboard programmer and composer and has worked for The Rolling Stones (1994 Voodoo Lounge tour), Stevie Wonder, The Baltimore Symphony, Joe Jackson, Jan Hammer, Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, PM Dawn, LucalFilms, and on and on. Sounds great, huh, and yes, he doesn't wear shoes. This band is musically blessed all around. You'll recognize Andy Shriver on lead guitar who played for the last decade with Jr. Cline & The Recliners, although during those years he also recorded and played with Cruel Shoes (founded by Crack The Sky leader John Palumbo), The Mary Blankemeier Group, and The David Bach Consort. Mark St. Pierre is the drummer/percussionist and vocals. J.-J. Gunning plays trombone and percussion; Dave Makowiecki is on trumpet and percussion; and Barry Caudill plays sax and wind synthesizer. These guys are all top notch musicians with credits to fill this whole column. You don't want to miss their act at Fager's Island - Saturday night. Be there!
